A Week With Cancer Boyday zero.  We're in red seats with our legs outstretched and laughter in our throats. I don't remember what we were laughing at, but we are, and this is how we met. You're the one with boxes full of books in your closet, you're telling me. Boxes and boxes full of coverless books by people no one has ever heard of. It doesn't matter because we're behind curtains, and you're trying to convince me to jump into a plastic pool. I promise that I will next time. But, for now at least, those red seats are looking empty.

know what to say. We were  driving. I couldn't walk away,  but he understood.  So he asked me  small things.

was going to start to breathe  again. I told him as soon as  oxygen was done being mad  at me. He laughed.

Swimming pool turbulence
Sky scraper palm trees
Easy fascination.


I don't know.
It was what I noticed when I was in Mrytle Beach this past summer.

Everyone had a swimming pool even though the ocean was 5 minutes away. Everywhere you looked were imported palm trees. I watched with a skeptic frown as people from all over the country fell for it, swallowed it up, choked on it.

Too many bikinis and fake body parts. Too much bleached hair and fake tanned stomaches. Too many plastic smiles and accented insults.

Take your ocean and sand and sun. I'll stick with my polluted air, snow, and dirty streets. Pave glitter into your sidewalks. I'll walk the freeway. Claim your corners. I'll crash classrooms.
